The Internet: A Credible Resource?

I found an interesting article today on MSN.com about the Internet. Congressman Tom DeLay recently criticized Supreme Court Justice Kennedy for doing his research on the Internet. Should judges peruse the Web rather than rely on traditional rules of evidence? Is it a viable resource? What do you all think?

That's tough. At first, I would want to say that he should not be able to do research on the internet - however, then I question, what is the internet for? We are asked or choose to do research online all the time. We rarely think twice about it until a situation such a this comes up. Interesting to think about ...

I think that the consensus is that the Internet is inherently an untrustworthy source. But then again, why are there so many informational webpages on the Internet? Is the Internet more of a forum for opinion than facts? I hadn't thought it was. And if we question the Internet, who is to say that TV is a credible source? If one finds an article on CNN.com, is that any different from the actual TV newscast? And is it different for a student to research on the Internet for schoolwork than it is for a judge, who is presumed to always have valid and correct sources for information? I think a long discussion could be devoted to this question!
Thanks for the comment!
